Welcome to the wonderful colourful world of wax print on cotton.

The technique of wax print on fabric; popularly known as Ankara, allows a person, a truly unique and individual mode of expression which has been used as everyday clothing across the world, for centuries.

New patterns are offered by creative printers, year, on year, fostering a whirlwind fashion industry.

Its popularity is due to its vast array of patterns, and vibrant colours on natural cotton fabric which allows the skin to breathe naturally; assisting the body’s cooling process in high-temperature environments.

This style of clothes is being observed more and more in Western cities. Spotted on the streets of many a metropolitan city, are those who are unafraid of expression who are emboldened by the power of quiet symbolism and colour. Ankara gives the wearer the ability to communicates ones mood and soul which are often instinctively understood by the observer.

A snazzy waistcoat or charming bag, an eye-drawing ‘technicolour dream’ coat; the cutting-edge innovation and creativity of seamstresses and fashion designers across the African continent, is at times breathtaking. This has always been a sustainable and environmentally conscious fashion industry. And it is on the rise, stamping its presence on the world stage; enticing fashion buyers from further afield to visit our intensely vibrant continent and sample its fabulous wares.

The variety of patterns available means that any item created from the fabric becomes utterly unique, because once the printers stop printing these patterns they become vintage, and are much sought after. Six or twelve yards of a discontinued pattern now actually accrues in value. Rest assured, that a gift to a loved one, of six yards of cloth, or of an item made from Ankara; such as a purse, rucksack, a long coat, a short skirt; maxi, midi & mini dresses are well thought out gifts from the heart, and will be treasured for years to come.

African Ankara is the original sustainable fashion industry because it has always unashamedly acknowledged that the female form is in constant flux. Each outfit can be taken in or out by a capable seamstress. Enabling you to get more mileage from your favourite outfit and pattern. Recycled cotton is collected from industry or consumer waste. Items are first separated by type and colour, then shredded by a machine into smaller pieces and further into crude fibre. It can then be respun back into yarn for reuse and given a new life as another product.

The items you see here are individual, there are rarely two of the same in our stock. Each item, whether bead or fabric necklace & bracelet sets, waistbeads, headpieces and purses, wallets and rings, children’s clothes, ladies wear or men’s wear, is distinctive and will make the owner stand out from the crowd, so they can broadcast their own, unique and individual, mode of expression without pause.

Welcome, Akwaaba, to the colorful world of Ankara fashion.

You are most welcome.
